Plunge Apps Is Here: What 15+ Years in Gaming Taught Us About App Growth

Discover how Plunge Apps is bringing 15+ years of mobile gaming expertise to consumer app growth. We fix monetization, onboarding, and retention where it matters most.

Generates a rich preview on social platforms.

Fifteen years ago, mobile gaming was booming. The category was crowded, new studios launched every week, and most still hadn't cracked monetization or retention. The industry learned how to scale those apps through years of iteration, failure, and eventually, a playbook that works.

Consumer apps are in that same moment now. More products than ever, more competition for attention, and most teams still building without the operating layer gaming spent years developing.

What's missing isn't another feature. It's a designed economy, like segmented payers, engagement built on rhythm instead of random pushes, and monetization structured around how people actually spend.

Not gamification. Badges and streaks aren't the answer. The work lives in the layer underneath them.

That's why we built Plunge Apps.

Why we launched Plunge Apps now

Building a consumer app has never been easier thanks to AI.  What used to take a team of ten is now a strong weekend, so more apps are launching faster than ever into a field that’s already crowded.

But the opportunity to scale is still there, especially when you look at the revenue data. According to Appfigures' 2025 annual report, global app downloads fell for the fifth year in a row - down 2.7% to roughly 107 billion. And AppsFlyer's 2025 data puts global user acquisition spend at $78 billion, up 13% year over year, with iOS surging 35%. Meanwhile, consumer spending inside apps climbed 21.6%, to reach close to $156 billion. The apps making more money are focusing less on new user acquisition, and more on maximizing retention and revenue from the users they already have.

Consider, also, that non-gaming IAP revenue passed gaming for the first time, according to  Sensor Tower's State of Mobile 2026 report. It’s up 21% YoY and nearly triple and nearly 3x its total from five years ago. The right non-gaming app monetization strategy is key for capturing this revenue and leveraging the opportunity that’s on the table right now.

    What makes Plunge Apps different

Gaming studios laid the foundation for monetizing and retaining users. At Plunge, we’ve spent fifteen years sitting inside these studios, helping make the decisions that shape monetization, engagement, onboarding, UA, and retention. We've seen which systems hold up when they meet real users and which ones don't - and more importantly, why.

What we take from gaming is never a template, because no two apps are ever the same. Instead, it's the underlying logic of how consumer behavior responds when product, pricing, and habit formation are designed together. And then we adapt that logic to the specific app in front of us. In practice, that can look like segmenting users by how they actually behave and spend, building pricing in layers instead of relying on a single flat tier, creating engagement around a repeating calendar rather than isolated feature drops, and tightening onboarding so the FTUE builds habit instead of driving more one-off sessions. Every app has its own core loop and audience, which is why this work has to be hands-on.

The real Plunge advantage is breadth. We look at everything - monetization, engagement, onboarding, store visibility, etc. - as one connected system, because that's how growth actually works. Separate specialists can find leaks in each area, but the biggest gains usually come from improvements that work across all of them at once.

3 consumer app challenges we solve

Consumer apps tend to hit the same walls. Here are 3 of the most common ones we see at Plunge - and that we know precisely how to solve for, regardless of studio size, user base, and core loop:

Monetization that stops at the subscription ceiling

Most apps launch with a subscription model and never build beyond it. But the power user who would spend far beyond even your highest subscription tier has nowhere to go. Gaming solved this with layered pricing: multiple price points and offer types built around how different users actually spend. At Plunge, we bring that same logic to consumer apps, finding what can exist alongside the base subscription to capture more revenue and deepen engagement.

Onboarding that loses users before they convert

Too many FTUE flows ask for a lot of setup before the user has seen enough value to care. They drop before they understand the product enough to want to stick around. We focus on getting users to the core “aha” moment faster, then move them through the rest of setup once they’re already engaged, like setting permissions or finalizing profile design.

Isolated improvements that don’t complement each other

Teams make isolated fixes and see little movement, because one change rarely changes the business. The gains we typically see come from stacking improvements across monetization, onboarding, and engagement at the same time - something we can do here at Plunge thanks to our team of experts that work together on every project. Rather than an isolated win, our efforts lead to organization-wide growth and keep compounding over time.

    How it works

The Plunge Apps engagement model is three stages over 90 days, each building on the last.

    Stage

    What happens

    Monetization Ceiling Audit

Map where the app is leaving revenue on the table and identify the highest-leverage opportunities across monetization, onboarding, and engagement.

    Revenue & Retention Sprint

Package and test the changes most likely to improve retention and engagement, validated quickly.

    Embedded Operations

Keep scaling growth with embedded operations - engagement calendar, offer engine, user segmentation - inside your product, with a team to run it day to day.

    Get your free audit

For a limited time, Plunge Apps is offering our founding clients a free Monetization Ceiling Audit. If you move into the Activation & Retention Sprint within 30 days, the audit fee is credited in full against it.

If your app is hitting any of the walls described above and you want an expert set of eyes on it, let's talk.
